The metaverse powerhouse Roblox may finally have its time in the spotlight thanks to Meta’s VR goggles. The Verge’s Command Line newsletter reports that in late 2023, Roblox may be aiming to launch on Quest.
It’s not the first time someone’s brought up bringing Roblox to Quest. Quest made “great sense for Roblox,” business CEO and co-founder Dave Baszucki stated in a 2021 investor call, implying that Roblox was planning to expand into virtual reality.
To play Roblox, players presently need to link their PC to a virtual reality headset such as the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. In other words, you can’t play a Quest game in the virtual world. It would be a big deal for Roblox and Meta Quest if Roblox decided to endorse the game.
In the event that the rumour becomes accurate, investors will be pleased. Both Roblox and Meta’s virtual reality business announced dismal financial results, with Roblox losing $297.8 million and Meta’s VR section losing $3.67 billion, respectively. In2023, Meta forecasts even greater financial losses.
In addition, Meta said in its earnings conference that a Quest 2 consumer-grade sequel is scheduled for release in 2023. This means that Roblox might be the first game available for Meta’s upcoming virtual reality headset when it launches later this year.
Considering that Quest Pro was first unveiled at Meta Connect2022, we may anticipate hearing more about the new virtual reality headset during the next Meta Connect conference, scheduled for the autumn of 2023. After Quest 2’s price rise of $100 to $500 in August 2022, the future headset is predicted to cost around the same.
