Your next smartphone is set to become even smarter, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The world’s leading smartphone manufacturers are gearing up to integrate generative AI tools into their upcoming handsets, promising a transformative user experience.

Samsung recently announced its ambitious plans to incorporate AI-powered features into its new devices. Among the innovations unveiled are tools that can compose emails based on prompts, suggest text message responses by analyzing past conversations, and enhance or modify photos using generative AI. These new AI features in the upcoming foldable phones, set for release on July 31, include real-time voice transcription, instant translation of foreign languages, automatic photo editing, and the ability to add objects to photos based on user drawings. Additionally, an updated version of Google’s Circle-to-Search feature will enable users to solve algebraic equations captured on camera. Another notable addition is the Suggested Replies feature, which analyzes recent text exchanges to suggest potential responses.

But Samsung is not alone in this AI revolution. Rivals Apple and Google have also declared their intentions to integrate AI technology into their future smartphones. Industry analysts predict that by 2027, more than 40% of smartphones will feature generative AI capabilities.

Eric Chou, Head of Mobile Experience at Samsung Australia, highlighted that users would have control over how they utilize these AI tools. A customer survey revealed that 80% of those with access to AI technology use it monthly.

“You still have control over what kind of tone, what kind of message you want to send,” Chou explained. “Ultimately, I think AI is going to be a tool and we’re not going to allow AI to completely take over what we do day to day.”

At a recent launch event held at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, Samsung showcased its latest AI-driven creations alongside the introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6. The event highlighted Samsung’s commitment to bringing generative AI tools to a wider audience. TM Roh, President of Samsung, emphasized the profound impact of AI on the company’s product lineup.

“Galaxy AI will be available in 200 million Galaxy devices this year,” he stated. “The impact will be profound.”

Apple, too, has announced plans to integrate generative AI tools into its smartphones. The company will leverage a combination of its proprietary software and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Google, on the other hand, is expected to unveil new AI tools powered by its Gemini AI model in the coming months.

Research from Counterpoint predicts that by 2027, generative AI tools will be utilized in over one billion smartphones, accounting for 43% of global smartphone shipments. Foad Fadaghi, Managing Director of Telsyte, noted that consumers could anticipate a surge of innovative AI features aimed at enhancing user experience and driving new device purchases.

“Across the board, all brands, all competitors are latching on to AI branding and AI functionality in their phones,” Fadaghi said. “It’s about creating hooks to re-engage their customers.”

Looking ahead, users can expect more AI-powered photography options in 2024, along with tools designed to help them write better emails and messages. The following are some of the key AI-powered features set to revolutionize smartphones:

Five AI-Powered Phone Features

Photos: AI technology will enhance photos by removing subjects, adding objects, or replicating backgrounds in devices from Samsung, Google, and future Apple phones.

Messages: AI can rewrite or suggest responses to text messages and emails. Samsung’s Suggested Replies feature will analyze recent messages between two people and compose possible responses.

Summaries: Apple’s upcoming AI software updates will enable phones to summarize, rewrite, or proofread text in emails and third-party apps.

Translation: Samsung’s Flip6 and Fold6 phones will feature real-time translation for conversations in different languages, displaying results on the outer screen.

Transcription: Google already offers voice-to-text conversion in its Pixel smartphones, and Samsung’s Note Assist feature will provide similar capabilities.
