Starting Thursday, Facebook will make WhatsApp’s end-to-end encrypted chat backups available for iOS and Android. For years, the company has provided end-to-end encryption for chats, but now you can get that level of security with your backups.
Whatsapp backups are kept in iCloud or Google Drive, but this means that Apple or Google may give access to the backups to governments or law enforcement if ordered to do so.
You can learn more about how encrypted backups work in our previous announcement and a Facebook white paper. If you wish to enable end-to-end encrypted backups for your account, Facebook has a guide you may follow here.
