The privacy-focused browser and search engine DuckDuckGo has revealed a new feature that will prevent one of the most prevalent types of pop-ups users see online: Please use your Google account to sign in.

Some websites that display this Google pop-up upon first page load include Reddit, Zillow, and Booking.com, according to the firm.

According to the company, users of its upgraded mobile applications or its extensions for Firefox, Chrome, Brave, and Edge would be “spared from these disruptive and deceptive pop-ups” in an effort to provide a “cleaner experience and greater privacy.”

However, DuckDuckGo claims that this goes beyond simply blocking intrusive ads.

The firm stated in a news release that linking your Google account with your surfing history is “another avenue for Google to follow users without them understanding,” and that a lawsuit (opens in new tab) has been filed to prevent the collecting of such information.

According to DuckDuckGo’s analysis, Google may be selling this to website owners as a “win-win” because it would let them display more targeted advertisements, which will in turn bring in more money. Also, it’s believed that Google is amassing massive amounts of data.

Soon, the company’s extensions for many of the most popular desktop web browsers will be updated to reflect the new features, as will the iOS and Android mobile browsers. A public beta version of the macOS software is now available, and a public beta version of the Windows app is due in the next weeks. Both versions are likely to eventually include it in its final forms.
