AMD beware: Intel reveals a 24-core laptop processor in a first-ever announcement

Yowsers! Now that we’ve seen Intel’s 2023 plans for the first time thanks to CES, we can safely say that the Intel Core i9-13980HX is the most powerful consumer laptop CPU in the world.

Intel apparently isn’t willing to rest on its laurels with the arrival of the phenomenally strong Core i9-13900K at the tail end of last year, since the company seems to be focusing heavily on CPUs at CES this year. We stock every desktop CPU from the latest 13th generation, in addition to a large number of mobile CPUs from the H, P, U, and N series.

The i9-13980HX, however, steals the show with its enormous 24 cores, a number that has never before been seen in a laptop CPU. The 32 threads are distributed between 8 performance cores and 16 efficiency cores. The announcement comes after Intel showed off the world’s first 16-core laptop CPU in early 2022, which was also a HX-series processor that made use of both performance and efficiency cores.

With a turbo frequency of 5.6GHz and all the capabilities found in Intel’s latest desktop CPUs, this new CPU is a true beast. This includes support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, compatibility with Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 6E, and improved integrated graphics performance.

Keep in mind that this chip is unlikely to be found in laptops without a dedicated graphics processor. A press statement from Intel called the i9-13980HX “the world’s greatest mobile gaming platform,” suggesting that it may appear in high-end laptops aimed at gamers and content makers, perhaps in tandem with the forthcoming RTX 4000 mobile graphics cards.
