Upcoming Apple Watch SE to Feature Kid-Friendly Design with Vibrant Colors and Durable Plastics

Deciding when your child is ready for a smartphone can be tough. Some parents believe high school is the right time, while others start even earlier, with pre-teens. Over the past few years, Apple has provided an alternative with its Apple Watch for kids, offering communication features without all the distractions of a full smartphone. Now, Apple seems ready to embrace this role even more.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is thinking about using plastic casings for its next Apple Watch SE. This could mean more color options, making the watch more attractive to kids. By making the $249 Apple Watch SE more appealing to families, Apple is solidifying its role as a stepping stone before a full-fledged smartphone.

Importantly, the Apple Watch SE includes cellular data and phone call capabilities, which aligns with Apple’s message: “It’s independence for them. And peace of mind for you.” The Apple Watch SE shares many features with its $399 counterpart but comes with a smaller, less advanced screen. Representatives from Apple haven’t commented yet, but the company has recently updated its website, describing the Apple Watch as “a great call for kids.”

A survey from Piper Sandler in May found that over a third of US teens own an Apple Watch. CNBC also reports that the wearable could be a good alternative for students in schools that are limiting smartphone use.

There’s no official word on when the next Apple Watch will be released. But considering the original came out in 2020 and the latest version in 2022, a 2024 update seems likely. Additionally, Apple is expected to launch a new version of its $429 iPhone SE next year.

These updates could make the Apple Watch SE even more appealing to families, providing a controlled way to introduce kids to digital communication.
