Due to engineering blunders, Apple abandoned its next-generation GPU plans for the iPhone 14 Pro

With each new generation of Apple’s gadgets, the company finds a method to increase the performance of its CPUs. This has been the case with Apple’s M series Mac CPUs and the A series iPhone chips for many years. Unfortunately, it seems like Apple’s ambitions for the iPhone 14 Pro GPU were a little too lofty.

Apple’s engineers had high hopes for the iPhone 14 Pro’s GPU but were forced to lower those expectations after experiencing technical difficulties.

The graphics processing unit of the iPhone 14 Pro might have supported hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Concerns about retaining talented employees are highlighted in the study as one of Apple’s silicon team’s main problems. It seems that the semiconductor team had intended for the greatest iPhone right now, the iPhone 14 Pro, to have a lot more competent GPU, but things didn’t quite work out that way.

The study claims the staff overshot its capabilities while developing advanced features. Among these improvements in processing power is supposedly hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro is already one of the most competent and fastest mobile processors available (GPU included), but Apple’s engineers wanted to push it even farther.

However, the prototypes’ technical shortcomings meant that they drew more power and ran hotter than they should have. In the end, the device had a GPU that was barely better than the GPU in the iPhone 13 Pro. According to The Information, this is Apple’s “greatest ever” failure.

If Apple can find a way past these obstacles, we may still see some of these GPU capabilities in the iPhone 15 series when it arrives.
