The Samsung Galaxy S23 may be the most durable mainstream smartphone to date

It’s not ideal that high-end cellphones are both costly and easily broken. However, it appears that Samsung Galaxy S23 models will begin to address this problem by becoming the first to have Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Corning has confirmed that “Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy flagship smartphones” would be the first to feature their new super-strong cover glass, which was first announced late last year. Corning can’t be talking about anything other than the next Samsung Galaxy S23 series of phones (which aren’t specifically named), as they are scheduled for release on February 1.

The language also implies (but does not confirm) that the S23, the Galaxy S23 Plus, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will all employ Gorilla Glass Victus 2. All three phones are probably made with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, as suggested by a leak.

Gorilla Glass 4.0 has been updated to be more scratch-resistant than the original Gorilla Glass Victus while still providing excellent drop protection on hard surfaces like concrete.

Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, which is used in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, is not mentioned here, but I assume Victus 2 is an improvement on it as well.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is made with an impressive average of 22% pre-consumer recycled material, which is great to know. Corning claims that concrete is the most common man-made substance in the world, so knowing that Victus 2 has a better chance of surviving a drop onto concrete is reassuring.

The initial batch of Victus 2 handsets

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which has Gorilla Glass Victus 2, is set to be revealed on February 1 and to begin shipping on February 17. There will undoubtedly be many more phones in the future that make use of Victus 2.

The only high-end phones that don’t employ Gorilla Glass are iPhones, which instead use Corning’s Ceramic Shield technology.

Because of this, we anticipate that most high-end smartphones this year will use Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for their cover glass. If history is any indication, that list might include the Sony Xperia 1 V, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Since the OnePlus 11 and Xiaomi 13 are now available in China, it’s safe to assume that they don’t utilise it, therefore Samsung wouldn’t be the first to do so. However, their successors and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra very well may.
