Temu has recalled a glow-in-the-dark hooded sweatshirt due to a significant burn risk to children, as stated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on Friday. These cozy, fluffy sweaters do not meet the mandatory safety standards for children’s nightwear.
According to the ACCC, the sweaters pose a serious burn hazard when exposed to heat or flames, a danger not immediately apparent to consumers. “Serious injuries to a child have already resulted from one such incident,” the watchdog highlighted.
The products, available in four designs including pink and purple rainbow unicorn, blue dinosaur, and space planet, were sold on the prominent online platform from October 10, 2023, to March 15, 2024.
The ACCC advises consumers to immediately stop using the sweaters and keep them out of children’s reach. They recommend destroying and safely disposing of the item.
For those affected by the recall, Temu, alongside the supplier Sunshine Towels, is offering a full refund. Customers can contact Temu’s customer support center for assistance and further information.
Product Safety has noted that children’s nightwear must be categorized into one of four classes based on the fabric type and must carry a fire hazard warning label. “Some materials are highly flammable and do not fit into any category, making them unsellable,” they said.
Failure to adhere to the Consumer Goods (Children’s Nightwear and Limited Daywear and Paper Patterns for Children’s Nightwear) Safety Standard 2017 can lead to hefty fines and penalties. This recall serves as a critical reminder of the necessity to comply with safety regulations to protect young consumers.
