Sony Introduces the PlayStation 5 Pro at $699.99

A bold step up from its predecessor, the PlayStation 5, Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro four years after the original’s launch. This new console iteration isn’t heralding the next generation but rather presents a robust mid-cycle enhancement, akin to the transition from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 4 Pro, tagged at $699.99. The PS5 Pro elevates processing capabilities, offering more vivid graphics and smoother gameplay for specially optimized games. However, the lack of an optical disc drive in the base model might leave those with a collection of physical games wanting.

Design and Practicality

Sporting the classic PlayStation aesthetics, the PS5 Pro offers a compact size at 15.4 x 3.2 x 8.2 inches. It features stark white side panels encasing a central black core, evoking a sleek, modern look. This version is distinguished by its bolder horizontal black bands. It supports both vertical and horizontal setups thanks to the included transparent stands.

The console uses colored light strips to indicate its status—white when on, orange in rest mode, and various colors during different operations, a user-friendly feature carried over from previous models. It houses multiple ports for connectivity including USB-C and USB-A, HDMI, and Ethernet, all neatly arranged for accessibility.

Controller Capabilities and Network Connectivity

The DualSense controller retains its advanced functionality without changes, equipped with a touchpad, sophisticated haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and built-in audio communication options. Despite its advanced features, the controller’s battery life is limited to 6-12 hours per charge, trailing behind the Xbox Series X controllers.

Under the hood, the PS5 Pro boasts a more potent GPU, increasing Compute Units by 67% and RAM speed by 28% over the original PS5. It introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for superior ray tracing and AI-enhanced graphics upscaling.

Optimized Gaming Performance

Sony has optimized over 50 PS5 titles to leverage the new console’s advanced capabilities, featuring major releases from both Sony’s own studios and other leading game developers. While the console remains compatible with all PS5 and PS4 titles, only those updated can fully utilize the new system’s power.

Enhanced Storage and Ultra-Fast Internet

The PS5 Pro doubles the storage capacity to a 2TB SSD, accommodating a larger game library. It also upgrades to Wi-Fi 7, providing up to 40Gbps with compatible setups, enhancing online gameplay connectivity.

Optical Drive Shortcomings

A significant drawback for the PS5 Pro is its omission of an optical disc drive, requiring an additional $80 outlay for those wishing to play physical media. This could be a significant deterrent for collectors and enthusiasts of physical games.

Overall Impressions

The PlayStation 5 Pro pushes the limits of console performance, with significant improvements in graphics and gameplay for optimized games. While its enhanced features and capabilities make it a standout choice for digital-first gamers or newcomers to PlayStation, the extra cost and lack of a built-in disc drive may sway existing PS5 owners to stick with the more economical base model. For those ready to dive into a fully digital gaming experience, the PS5 Pro offers a compelling, albeit pricier, option.
