Shadow and Bone season 2 has cast Nikolai and Wylan, thanks to the Saints

Season 2 of Shadow and Bone has already begun production — and, after over a year of waiting, we now know who will portray fan favourites Nikolai and Wylan.

The cast of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone revealed in a video before production on Season 2 began that the cameras had begun rolling once again on location in Budapest.

But it isn’t the only piece of news that will have Shadow and Bone fans yelling “Thank the Saints!” again and over. Four new cast members for the Netflix programme have also been unveiled, including the actors who will play iconic characters Nikolai and Wylan.

Patrick Wolfe (Tolkien, The Darkest Minds) will portray Nikolai Lantsov, a character in Leigh Bardugo’s epic book series who also goes by the pen name Sturmhond. In the novels, the former King of Ravka disguises himself as the captain of a pirate gang in order to conceal his actual identity from The Darkling.

Lewis Tan, the Mortal Kombat star, is undoubtedly the most well-known of the newly revealed foursome. Tan will play Grisha Heartrender Tolya Yul-Bataar, a member of Nikolai’s pirate gang.

Wylan Hendriks will be played by Jack Wolfe (Inside No. 9, The Witcher) — in the books, he is known as Wylan Van Eck, but his name has been altered for Netflix’s TV version. Wylan joins the Dregs as a demolitions specialist and assists them in rescuing someone named Bol Yul-Bayur from the Ice Court, a Fjerdan fortress, in Bardugo’s series.

Anna Leong Brophy, finally (Last Tango in Halifax, Traces) Tamar Kir-Battar, another Heartrender but an ex-member of Nikolai’s group, will be played by Brophy as Tolya’s twin brother. Tamar does not appear in the primary trilogy of Shadow and Bone novels, but we’ll explain why she is in season 2 below.

According to recent sources, principal filming for Shadow and Bone season 2 will begin in early January. And, based on these announcements, the rumours were confirmed.

It’s uncertain how long season 2 will be in the works. The first season of Shadow and Bone, on the other hand, took four months to shoot. If the sequel takes the same length of time, main shooting may wrap in May. If that is the true, we may see Shadow and Bone season 2 arrive in the last few months of 2022, which would be a fantastic early Christmas gift.

The tale of Shadow and Bone Season 2 will encompass more than one volume.

The new cast members of Shadow and Bone provide an interesting insight into Season 2’s prospective stories.

Tamar Kir-inclusion Battar’s to this cast, as previously stated, seems to suggest that Shadow and Bone season 2 will draw from more than one of the books. Why? Tamar does not appear in any of the three major volumes in the book series.

Tamar initially appears in King of Scars, a spin-off from the main trilogy that follows Nikolai Lantsov, Nina Zenik (played by Danielle Galligan in the show), and, probably most crucially, Zoya Nazyalensky (played by Sujaya Dasgupta in the TV show).

Given that Tamar and her twin brother Tolya meet Zoya in King of Scars and since the trio is part of the season 2 cast, we’re convinced that the narrative of season 2 will integrate parts of King of Scars. This is in addition to Siege and Storm, the second novel in the main trilogy, and maybe Crooked Kingdom, the second book in another spin-off series that continues the Dregs’ saga.

The first season of the programme used aspects from Six of Crows – the first novel featuring the Dregs – as well as Shadow and Bone, the first novel in the mainstream series, indicating that Netflix has a history of blending storylines from the novels in its TV version.

With Shadow and Bone season 2 introducing four new characters from other novels in the series, we wouldn’t be shocked if narrative lines from Siege and Storm, Crooked Kingdom, and King of Scars don’t fill out the eight-episode run. Hopefully, we’ll receive some formal confirmation at Paris Roster Con, where a Shadow and Bone season 2 panel will take place on January 22 and 23.
