The Bitmoji-like avatars from Meta will now have official support on WhatsApp

Avatars, the individualised icons found on other Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram, are now rolling out to the popular messaging app WhatsApp. The messaging service Meta has announced that users may now use these images as their profile pictures or as one of 36 unique stickers while communicating with others. According to Meta’s announcement, the update “will be flowing out to users everywhere from today.”

Several months have passed since WhatsApp began pushing out its avatars feature to beta users. Since at least October, they have been accessible to certain (but not all) beta users on both Android and iOS, and it is believed that they will become available for all users on mobile over the next weeks.

Avatars like Meta’s are only one type of user-created digital figure used in today’s plethora of social media sites and instant messaging programmes. Popular examples include Snap’s 2D characters known as Bitmoji, as well as Apple’s Memoji and Samsung’s AR Emoji, all of which function as system-level avatars. To the contrary, Meta sees this feature as perhaps the most important, and is marketing their implementation of it as the entity that will one day represent its users in the so-called metaverse.
