Battle between the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti and AMD RX 7900 XTX gets a shocking twist

The rumoured Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti has surfaced in a test on Twitter, revealing the GPU to be somewhat faster than AMD’s RX 7900 XTX. This has surprised many, but you shouldn’t get too excited about it just yet (we’ll explain why below).

When considering the Geekbench result for the graphics card that was released by Benchleaks, it is important to keep in mind that, as is often the case with pre-release leaks, it may not be legitimate.

With Geekbench 5, we can observe that the RTX 4070 Ti scores 214,654 on the OpenCL test. VideoCardz notes that this is 45% faster than the previous generation and 2% faster than AMD’s latest RDNA 3 flagship.

In addition, we get a view of the boost speed and certain spec information that match earlier leaking, such as the existence of 7,680 CUDA Cores, which again emphasises that this GPU should feature the entire loadout of cores for the AD104 chip.

This last figure is particularly intriguing since it differs from the leaks we have seen so far and is estimated to be 2,730MHz, rather than 2,610MHz.

It just doesn’t add up…

Of course, a generational increase of 45 percent is incredibly amazing; yet, there are several caveats to be made. In this scenario, Geekbench OpenCL is a computational test for GPUs, but we should not place too much weight on a single benchmark, particularly a leaked one. What we need are measurements for gaming, and most importantly, real-world in-game benchmarks, and plenty of them (as results can vary considerably from game to game when comparing different graphics cards).

The claim that the RTX 4070 Ti is superior to AMD’s latest RX 7900 XTX is obviously false. Because Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) and drivers perform better on this specific compute test compared to AMD’s cards, this demonstrates why a single benchmark result should not be relied upon too much.

Not only is the score questionable, but so is the increase speed, which, as already said, contradicts yet another recent report. Our best guess is that the RTX 4070 Ti was overclocked from its stock speed of 2,610MHz in order to achieve the 2,730MHz achieved in this benchmark. That is to say, we anticipate the 4070 Ti to have the same boost speed as the cancelled RTX 4080 12GB (after all, it would be extremely unusual if it were quicker, being a lower-tier card in its new iteration).

Increasing RTX 4070 Ti leaks lend credence to the idea that Nvidia will introduce the GPU during their CES address on January 3. (followed by it being on shelves swiftly come January 5).

The true test of whether or not the RTX 4070 Ti represents excellent value for money will be how it performs in comparison to its asking price. Unfortunately, we have little faith in a positive outcome on that front, but you never know…
