Imagination introduces the IMG DXT GPU for ray-tracing mobile games

Imagination Technologies has introduced the IMG DXT GPU, a new graphics processing unit (GPU) optimized for mobile games that use ray tracing.

The chip is the most recent innovation in an ongoing endeavor to provide a more lifelike visual experience on mobile devices. It’s a huge improvement over the GPUs of old, doubling their performance.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Kristof Beets, Imagination Technologies’ vice president of technology, claimed that the gaming sector is still expanding rapidly and that GPU chip advances are only one part of the equation.

Beets argued that “quality” by itself was insufficient. We need to make sure to provide enough performance for that kind of game. How can we get sufficient refresh rates? The issue with mobile is that it is a battery-powered devices.

The solution is on developing more efficient chip designs. The rewards, however, will be substantial: mobile gamers are predicted to increase from 2.6 billion in 2022 to 3.9 billion in 2030, according to ABI Research. And by the year 2026, more than 95% of gamers will be doing it on a mobile device.

Imagination has been on quite the treadmill. In 2019, AMD introduced the AXT GPU family, then in 2020 and 2021, it introduced the BXT and CXT series. About 18 months following the announcement, licensees release their goods to the public.

Imagination is aimed at the mobile device and autonomous vehicle industries. Its ray-tracing capability, previously only available on expensive desktop GPUs or gaming consoles, was expanded last year.

With 2.25 teraflops at FP32, 72 gigapixels per second, and 9.0 TOPS AI performance, the DXT is 50% more powerful than the previous generation.

It’s true that “we’re enabling greater performance at higher density,” as Beets put it. “The components focus more on how to make widespread use of ray tracing a reality,” the authors write.

The GPU has capabilities such as a RISC-V firmware processor, support for ASTC HDR, pipelined data masters, and dual-rate texturing in 2 dimensions. Modifications to the chip’s pipeline, and more, will be possible. Open-source game engines may be used with it.

The DXT series has three different devices with performance levels from 256 gigaflops to 2.25 teraflops.
