OpenAI recently introduced a new feature, “ChatGPT Search,” which provides real-time, conversational search responses directly on the platform. This tool aims to enhance the way users obtain current information, including live sports scores, news updates, and financial data through a natural language interface. Initially, this feature is available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, with plans for a wider release soon.
In conjunction with this rollout, OpenAI has launched a Chrome extension titled “ChatGPT search,” which sets ChatGPT as the default search engine within the Chrome browser. All searches from the Chrome address bar will be directed to “https://chatgpt.com/”.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman promoted the extension on social media, advising users to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus and integrate the extension for optimal performance.
However, cybersecurity analyst Tal Be’ery has voiced concerns, noting that the extension functions like many other basic browser add-ons by merely altering Chrome’s search settings—often seen with typical search hijackers. While it currently poses no harm, Be’ery warns of potential privacy issues in future updates.
Users hesitant to install the extension can still utilize ChatGPT Search by manually configuring it within Chrome’s settings:
- Access Chrome settings via Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines and site search.
- Click “Add” under “Site Search” and fill in:
- Name: ChatGPT Search
- Shortcut: @cgpt
- URL: https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s
- After saving, set it as the default search engine by clicking the three vertical dots next to ChatGPT Search and choosing “Make default”.
This method avoids the need for additional extensions, maintaining browser efficiency and minimizing potential conflicts.
While the ChatGPT Search extension is considered safe, manually setting up a search shortcut in Chrome offers a straightforward alternative that keeps the browser streamlined and focused directly on accessing ChatGPT’s enhanced capabilities.
