The Google Home ecosystem and Android phones are receiving Matter

In November of 2022, after years of anticipation and teasers, Matter was released. The smart home standard is complete and ready for use, and many devices are being upgraded to support it. This will allow you to connect any gadgets in your house independent of ecosystem or manufacturer. Today, Google revealed that it is joining the bandwagon as well, saying that nearly all Android phones and the vast majority of its excellent smart home gadgets now include Matter.

Updates for the many Android handsets and many of Google’s smart home gadgets have been rolling out over the past few weeks, and the firm claims they are now complete as of today.

Perhaps most interestingly, the upgrade will bring Fast Pair compatibility to Android devices. Similarly to how you can easily connect the newest headphones and other accessories, you can do the same with a new smart home gadget that supports Matter by just tapping a button.

Having a complete hub to aggregate all devices that support matter is impossible without the standard being supported by the Google Home app for Android. Matter support for Google Home on iOS is expected in 2023, so if that’s your preferred platform, you’ll have to wait a little longer.

In addition, Matter is now compatible with Google’s smart home gadgets. The following products are now compatible with the smart home standard thanks to the company:

  • The original Google Home speaker
  • Google Home Mini
  • Nest Mini
  • Nest Audio
  • Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen)
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Wifi Pro

You may also get full Matter support for your smart home devices by using the Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Hub Max, or Nest Hub (2nd gen) as so-called Thread border routers. To elaborate, Matter uses a wide variety of wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread. The latter is a low-power network operating in tandem with your existing Wi-Fi system, and it is ideal for energy-efficient gadgets like smart locks.

While there are a few glaring absences from Google’s list, the firm has made it quite clear that additional Nest devices will be updated in the following year (2023). In 2020, the Nest Thermostat will also be updated to support the standard, along with the original Nest Wifi.

In 2023, Google plans to improve Matter’s Multi Admin function and collaborate with Samsung SmartThings to create a streamlined way to link connected home gadgets to both services with minimal effort. That’s fantastic for families where members utilise a variety of various devices.

In general, the distribution of Matter has been gradual since the major announcement in November, but that might soon change. If Google, a major player and potential gatekeeper, endorses the standard, we may soon witness a flood of smart home devices that come equipped with Matter. In reality, Google claims to collaborate with Eve, Meross, Nanoleaf, Philips Hue, and Tuya to promote Matter.
