GTA: San Andreas VR Project Paused Indefinitely as Meta and Rockstar Redirect Focus

Nearly three years after its announcement, the virtual reality adaptation of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been placed on indefinite hold. Meta Quest has confirmed that both its development team and Rockstar Games have decided to temporarily pause the project to concentrate on other initiatives.

In a statement shared through Meta’s official YouTube channel and later with IGN, the company explained, “GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to collaborating with Rockstar in the future.” This decision reflects a strategic shift as both companies reassess their priorities.

At the time of the original announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had promised an “entirely new way to experience the iconic open world in virtual reality.” Despite the anticipation, no gameplay footage or assets were ever revealed, leaving the project shrouded in uncertainty.

Meta’s recent strategic adjustments, including reduced investment in VR operations in favor of metaverse development and artificial intelligence, likely contributed to this decision. Rockstar Games, meanwhile, is deeply invested in the development of Grand Theft Auto VI, a major undertaking that understandably requires significant resources.

The San Andreas VR project was announced alongside the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, a remastered collection that was met with widespread criticism for its technical flaws. This may have further influenced Rockstar’s decision to focus on future projects rather than revisiting older titles in VR.

For now, the future of San Andreas VR remains uncertain as both Meta and Rockstar navigate their evolving priorities. Fans will need to wait and see if the project is revived at a later date.
