Google Unveils Gemini-Powered Enhancements for Chrome Desktop

On Thursday, Google announced a series of new Gemini-powered features for Chrome’s desktop version, which are set to roll out globally in the coming days. These updates include Google Lens for desktop, a Tab Compare tool for shopping assistance, and natural language integration for search history.

One of the most anticipated updates is the ability to search browsing history using natural language. This feature, rolling out as an opt-in option for U.S. users, allows for more intuitive searches. For example, you can ask, “What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?” and Google will use a combination of URL, title, and page content to find the right page. Importantly, this data is not used to train Gemini and does not include information from incognito sessions. Currently, AI-powered search history processing occurs in the cloud, as local processing isn’t available yet.

Google Lens, a popular feature on mobile, is finally making its way to desktop. Accessible from the address bar and the three-dot menu, users can click to select parts of a webpage and ask questions to get relevant search results. For instance, you can click on an image of a backpack and use multi-search to find similar items in different colors or brands. Depending on the query, you might also receive AI-generated overviews. Beyond shopping, Lens can assist with various tasks, such as determining the sunlight requirements of a plant or solving a math equation.

Another exciting feature is Tab Compare, designed to simplify online shopping. This AI-powered tool provides a summary of similar items being searched across different tabs. For example, if you’re comparing Bluetooth speakers, Tab Compare will consolidate product specifications, features, prices, and ratings into a single view, even if these details are spread across multiple pages.

Earlier this year, Google introduced several AI-powered features, including a writing assistant, tab organizer, and theme creator. In May, the company added the ability to mention Gemini and ask questions directly from the address bar.

With these new features, Google aims to make Chrome desktop more interactive and user-friendly. As they roll out, users can look forward to a smarter and more efficient browsing experience.
