In the United States, Ford has a bold notion for how it might improve the reliability of electric car charging stations: charge angels.
“They’ll just go around checking them all day long to see where they fail and why,” Palmer said.
“There are a lot of outlets out there, but some of them are antiquated and don’t have the quality or dependability we require,’ Palmer said. ‘About 99.5 percent of customers go into a charger and obtain a charge.
We encountered this difficulty first-hand while reviewing the Mach-E for Ford. Instead of creating its own charging stations like Tesla, Ford has the ‘FordPass Charging Network,’ which includes more than 13,500 charging stations provided by third parties such as Electrify America and ChargePoint.
“For example, I attempted one journey to an Electrify America station, which is essentially Volkswagen’s fledgling version of Tesla’s Supercharger network. The first plug I tried gave me repeated error messages. When I tried another plug, a moth flew out, and then the car charged far more slowly than it should have.
When comparing a Tesla to a Mustang Mach-E in a 1,000-mile road trip, YouTuber Marques Brownlee discovered the Tesla was considerably easier to locate on the road than the Mustang.
