Double UHD, QD-OLED, and More on Samsung Odyssey Gaming Monitors

At CES, gaming monitor manufacturers unveil their most cutting-edge products, and the Odyssey Neo G9, a 57-inch curved DisplayHDR 1000 model, is among the most impressive. AMD hinted to the Neo G9’s 7,680×2,160 resolution during the debut of its RX 7000-series GPUs last November, making it the first monitor to be unveiled with DisplayPort 2.1 functionality. Even though it’s not a true 8K (it’s a 32:9 aspect ratio), the high resolution, HDR, and quick 240Hz refresh rate make the high-bandwidth DP 2.1 important.

The only GPU that can currently handle this resolution with all the bells and whistles is probably the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, but Nvidia hasn’t upgraded to DP 2.1 yet, so there’s still a bit of a gap there (HDMI 2.1 can support it but only at 60Hz). The RX 7900 XTX from AMD is equipped with DP2.1 ports, although it falls short of the requirements in all but the most demanding situations.

The 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SC) isn’t the company’s first Quantum Dot OLED monitor announcement; in August, it presented a 34-inch G8 model identical to the Alienware 34 QD-OLED at IFA, with a shipping date of the end of 2022 but now “very soon.”

The G9 is verified by DisplayHDR as having True Black 400 and a resolution of 5,120×1440 (effectively 32:9 1440p, but with superior pixel density than the standard 21:9 3,440×1,440). In addition to incorporating Samsung’s Gaming Hub for cloud gaming and boasting a refresh rate that’s even quicker than Alienware’s 240Hz, the monitor also offers a better response time. In addition to HDMI and USB-C with 65w power delivery, this model also features small DisplayPort, which Samsung elected to use instead of full-size DisplayPort.

Pricing has not been announced, but Samsung says it plans to begin shipping devices later this year.

The flat Odyssey Neo G7 goes a bit sleeker and more gaming-slash-entertainment hybrid than its predecessors, but it is a touch more ordinary if you think 43-inch displays have achieved that level of commonality. The 144 Hz Quantum Dot DisplayHDR 600-compliant display includes stereo speakers, a remote, and access to Samsung’s full suite of Hub streaming and gaming services.
