In response to another large-scale data breach, Facebook is taking legal action. According to The Record, the social network has filed a lawsuit against Alexander Solonchenko of Ukraine for allegedly scraping data from over 178 million users via Messenger’s contact import function using an automated software that resembled Android devices.
Between January 2018 and September 2019, Facebook is said to have been the target of a spamvertising operation that netted over 100 million users. Solonchenko allegedly conducted the campaign between January 2018 and September 2019 (when Facebook shut down the importer), then began selling it on a black market forum in December 2020.
This isn’t the first time Facebook has had to deal with such an issue. Through the same functionality, hackers obtained data for 533 million users.
