The team at Digital Foundry, known for their expertise in gaming hardware, recently appeared on IGN’s podcast to discuss the ongoing debate between the PS5 Pro and high-performance PCs. They’re the go-to experts for breaking down these comparisons, and their insights help explain why it’s tricky to match up the PS5 Pro against what’s available in the PC world today.
Richard Leadbetter, who heads Digital Foundry, highlighted that Sony hasn’t fully clarified the PS5 Pro’s technical capabilities or why this next step in console gaming is so significant. However, he shed light on the unique AMD technology in the PS5 Pro, explaining that it’s a collaboration between AMD and Sony, making certain features exclusive to the console that you simply won’t find in current AMD GPUs for PCs.
Leadbetter explained, “If you look at the entire package—enhanced ray tracing, machine learning—there’s no AMD GPU on the market right now that offers this combination. It’s almost like AMD has built something with Nvidia-like features specifically for the PS5 Pro.”
According to him, the closest PC equivalent would be Nvidia’s RTX 4070, a high-end card that typically ranges from $829 to over $1,000 on Australian retailer sites. He further added, “The RTX 4070 would be the closest match to the PS5 Pro’s power. The RTX 4060 compares to the base PS5, but it lacks the machine learning and advanced ray tracing. Plus, if you factor in the additional components like the CPU, motherboard, memory, power supply, case, and a 2TB SSD, the price of a comparable PC setup starts climbing.”
When considering the cost, it’s clear that a gaming PC with similar specs to the PS5 Pro would run well over $1,200. While that might seem steep for a console, the tech under the hood—particularly the advancements in ray tracing and AI—shows that the PS5 Pro is bringing something new to the table.
We’ll need to wait for the PS5 Pro’s release to fully understand how its performance stacks up against PCs, but the technological leap it represents for AMD and Sony is undeniable.
