A glimpse of Comcast’s symmetrical multi-gigabit deployment for next year is provided by this test

A symmetric multi-gigabit DOCSIS 4.0 connection was successfully tested on Comcast’s live network, the company reported in a press statement, marking a significant step toward “providing 10G-enabled services” in the second half of 2023.

Multiple cable modems and a DOCSIS 4.0-capable 10G node were used to connect service at a secret corporate site in Philadelphia, where Comcast is based. The simple definition of 10G is “more than 5G.” To have something with twice as many Gs as 5G wireless, the cable sector brought out its marketing phrase in 2019, as we mentioned.

Comcast claims that a January lab test produced rates of more than 4Gbps in both directions, which is within the range that is expected with DOCSIS 4.0 technology.

It may also provide Comcast with an additional income stream from its current customer base, which would be consistent with the company’s new strategy to boost revenue despite slowing customer growth in recent quarters. Comcast has already informed its customers that it would be boosting cable and internet rates this month. The average nationwide increase is 3.8%. The cost of internet access increased by $3 for one Verge writer, but the cost of cable television increased by more than $7.

Earlier this year, Comcast declared that it was planning to bring multi-gig Internet speeds to more than 50 million U.S. homes and companies by the end of 2025. The business has increased download speeds in numerous regions and has plans to roll out 2Gbps connections to 34 cities by the end of this month.

It is expected that 10G technology would provide multi-gigabit speeds for both downloads and uploads, similar to fibre optic internet connections (today, Comcast’s gigabit plans offer upload rates of just 200Mbps). If you’re thinking about upgrading, though, you should know that you’ll likely need a second new cable modem.

Those living in rural or outlying locations, or anywhere where fibre isn’t readily available, should see an improvement in their connection speeds as a result of this. And in competitive areas, it’s more comparable to competitors like Verizon, AT&T, Google, and Frontier Communications, who provide symmetrical multi-gigabit connections to select users.

“We started this year with the announcement of our world-first test of 10G modem technology capable of delivering multi-gig speeds to homes and, as of today, 10G is a reality with the potential to transform and evolve the Internet as we know it,” said Elad Nafshi, EVP and Chief Network Officer at Comcast Cable. “It’s been an incredible year of progress, and we look forward to continuing to refine and harden our 10G technology as we work to make this service—and all its incredible benefits—available to all customers in the years ahead.”
