Commonwealth Bank Faces Technical Glitch, Duplicating Customer Transactions

Commonwealth Bank is working to resolve a glitch that has left many of its customers frustrated, as reports of duplicate transactions surfaced over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, hundreds of customers noticed unexpected charges in their accounts, with some finding themselves overdrawn.

Affected customers quickly took to social media to express their outrage. One individual shared, “We woke up to find our accounts in the negative, with double charges from transactions made two or three days ago. This is unacceptable.”

Another customer stated, “My account has been wiped out, and I demand answers!”

The bank confirmed the issue later in the day, acknowledging that some transactions had been duplicated. Commonwealth Bank assured customers that it was working to reverse the errors and refund any associated fees. In a statement, the bank explained, “We are aware of the problem and are in the process of reversing these duplicate charges. Refunds will be applied automatically, and there is no need for customers to contact us.”

Although the issue caused significant disruption, Commonwealth Bank emphasized that other services—including the CommBank app, NetBank, credit and debit cards, ATMs, and merchant terminals—remained fully operational.

For customers facing financial difficulties due to the glitch, Commonwealth Bank offered temporary overdraft support and encouraged those affected to call 13 2221 or visit a local branch for assistance.

Additionally, the bank warned customers to be vigilant against potential scams, reminding them that Commonwealth Bank will never request sensitive banking information such as passwords or NetCodes via email or SMS. The bank urged customers to be cautious and to report any suspicious activity.

While the bank is prioritizing the resolution of this issue, it did not specify an exact timeline for when all accounts would be corrected. Affected customers are advised to monitor their accounts and expect the reversal of any duplicate charges in the coming days.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with managing digital banking services, where glitches—though infrequent—can have widespread impacts on customers’ financial security.
