Sportsbook giant BetMGM discloses a data breach and the theft of customer information

There have been rumours that major sports betting operator BetMGM was the victim of a cyber attack, with claims claiming that the details of more than 1.5 million customers were compromised.

On a hacker forum, a user with the handle “betmgmhacked” advertised a database containing “every BetMGM’s casino client as of November 2022.”

The attackers claim that the database includes the personal information of 1,568,310 people. Customer names, addresses (physical and electronic), dates of birth, Social Security numbers (hashed), unique account IDs, and BetMGM transaction details were among the data exposed.

Full sets of casino information

As of the month of November 2022, the database has information on more than 1.5 million people who have visited casinos owned by BetMGM in the states of Michigan, New Jersey, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The ad claims to have “every client who has made a bet at a casino” in their database.

The hackers also claim that the database has information on BetMGM casino clients in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as a “Master Casino” data set including information on consumers from all US states.

Since the advertisement was uploaded, the corporation has issued a press statement confirming its veracity. BetMGM claimed in the report that it discovered the occurrence in November 2022, but in reality it occurred in May.

BetMGM claims in the statement that there is “currently no indication” that customer passwords or account cash were accessed in connection with the incident. Online BetMGM activities were not hacked. BetMGM is working with the police and taking further measures to ensure the safety of its customers.

There would be “unsolicited messages” and “strange activities,” the business told its clients.

Whether or if malware or phishing sites were a part of the data breach was not disclosed, nor were the methods or tools employed.
