Amazon launches Prime Air and starts using drones to deliver packages in Texas and California

With the launch of Amazon Prime Air, the company is now offering drone delivery of purchased items. Amazon’s Drone deliveries are operational in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas, however they will only deliver a limited quantity of products in both locations before the end of the year.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration granted the retail giant permission to utilise drones for package delivery in early August of this year. Approximately 85 percent of all Amazon packages are sent with the maximum weight of 5 pounds or 2.25 kilos since that is what Prime Air can carry.

Residents in both communities may now choose to subscribe to the service. In such case, Amazon will verify whether or not it is able to make a secure delivery to the given address. A consumer who has placed an order will be given a delivery estimate and tracking information.

Amazon claimed the drone will fly to the specified delivery location, land in the customer’s property, and hover at a safe distance. At that point, it will release the cargo without incident and resume its ascent.

“We want to safely carry our drones up into the air,” Natalie Banke, an Amazon Air spokesperson, said in a statement to the media. We’ll begin with two test markets (Lockeford, CA, and College Station, TX) then expand distribution to other areas as demand grows.

Amazon’s MK27-2 delivery drone is designed to minimise the production of high-frequency noise by having a hexagonal body and six propellers. Currently, the organization’s top priority is ensuring passengers’ safety on their trips. Amazon is now keeping an eye on deliveries and has hired humans to keep track of each drone, but eventually they will be able to fly autonomously using algorithms to avoid obstacles like power lines and chimneys, much like a self-driving electric vehicle.
