The Wi-Fi 6E upgrade for the iPhone 15 might only apply to the Pro models

When the iPhone 15 variants are released, we anticipate that there will be a number of distinctions between the base two phones and the two more costly Pro versions, with Wi-Fi compatibility being one among them.

Information on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max antenna architecture was leaked in a document shared by Twitter user Unknownz21.

The paper claims that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will both continue to use the same Wi-Fi 6 specification as the iPhone 14 series. However, the Pro and Pro Max will get an update to the newest Wi-Fi 6E standard.

The art of counting

We had heard rumours earlier in the week that the iPhone 15 series will be getting Wi-Fi 6E in2023, but we had assumed that the update would apply to all models at the time. Now it seems that is not the case.

There isn’t much of a performance difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E; however, Wi-Fi 6E adds support for a sixth frequency band operating at 6 GHz in addition to the existing 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. To take full benefit of the new features, you’ll also need a Wi-Fi 6E router.

While the iPhone 15 Ultra’s Wi-Fi 6E update isn’t specifically listed in the leaked documents, we’re going to assume it’s included if the devices are legit. The phone’s status as a standalone product or a successor to the iPhone Pro Max is still unknown.

incentive to improve even more

Apple has made it plain in previous years, and especially with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, that it wants Pro model upgrades to be as valuable as possible for users. The status quo models almost seem ignored.

As an example, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus received the A15 Bionic chipset last year, while the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max received the most recent A16 Bionic update.

While an improvement in Wi-Fi standards may not be the most compelling argument to buy one of the Pro models when they are released, it is still something to consider (which will be in September, if Apple sticks to its usual schedule).

The cheaper iPhones run the risk of being overlooked by purchasers (with rumours suggesting that the Plus version is not selling well at all), but with the Pro versions retailing for more money, it seems to be a trade-off that Apple is willing to make.
