Data.ai: After the pandemic spike, mobile gaming starts to decline

This week saw the publication of a new analysis about the triumphs of mobile gaming in 2022 from Data.ai, the analytics firm previously known as App Annie. The research claims that mobile gaming is beginning to fall after its epidemic-era surge, but that it is now stable at a historically high level. It also brought attention to a handful of games that have withstood the declining trend.

Data.ai notes that even while mobile sales are on the decline in 2022, they are higher than they were before the epidemic hit. To give just one example, February 2020 saw $5.24 billion in consumer spending on games around the world. In September of 2022, the equivalent figure was $6.5 billion. The latter figure is lower than the all-time high of $7.73 billion in July 2021, but it’s still higher than expenditure before the outbreak.

On top of all that, data from 2020 and 2021 provided by Data.ai indicates that a growing number of new games are quickly becoming financially successful. In 2021, there will be 25 newly released games in the Top 100 in terms of consumer expenditure, up from 19 in 2020. Information on 2022 is missing from the study, and it’s not clear if it would be similar to 2020 or 2021.

How do we know which mobile games are popular?

Since Apple implemented their new privacy policies, iOS game revenues have continued to decrease. Some games are still doing well despite the industry-wide slump. The report states that the success of games like Merge Mansion can be attributed to strong marketing and interesting storylines within the game itself.

Despite this, it seems that games that are part of major gaming brands are also performing well. Mobile versions of games like Apex Legends and Diablo Immortal are examples of this. Genshin Impact, which can be found on multiple platforms and boasts a compelling story and a sizable marketing budget, is also doing very well. Mobile casino games, which data.ai found to be rapidly expanding in popularity, are another area that is holding its own.
