The BBC has taken action against Apple by filing a formal complaint after AI-generated notifications falsely attributed to the broadcaster were circulated. This issue surfaced following the launch of Apple Intelligence in the UK, a feature that uses artificial intelligence to compile notifications from multiple news sources.
One particular notification incorrectly claimed that the BBC had reported on the suicide of Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the murder of a healthcare executive in New York, detained in the U.S. This incident has compelled the BBC, widely respected for its journalistic credibility, to safeguard its reputation.
“Audience trust is paramount, and we must ensure it extends to all content associated with our name, including AI-generated notifications,” a BBC spokesperson remarked.
The BBC has contacted Apple to address and resolve this misleading information promptly. Reports have also emerged of similar issues with notifications falsely attributed to the New York Times, though no confirmation has been obtained from the American publisher yet.
