If they weren’t accurate in their health monitoring, the top smartwatches and fitness trackers on the market today wouldn’t make the cut. In contrast, there is now a bit of a desert out there for people seeking even lower profile solutions. The Oura Ring has been around for three generations, but users must pay a monthly fee to access the full range of health information it gives. Movano Health, located in California, has released a new smart ring targeted towards women in an effort to change the status quo.

Additionally to monitoring ovulation, periods, and menstruation symptoms, the Evie can also measure heart rate variability, SpO2, resting heart rate, and skin temperature fluctuation. Furthermore, the Evie will offer information on active minutes, steps performed daily, sleep phases, emotions, and more.

Movano Health claims it will provide “actionable insights” in the form of a mobile app to transmit the data. According to its authors, this information will empower women to make the healthy choices that will reduce their risk of developing chronic illnesses.

All of this information, though, is included in the under-$300 price tag of the Evie smart ring, so it won’t be generating money off of it forever. To put that in perspective, the newest Oura Ring costs $299 + $6 each month for data analysis.

The actual ring is constructed of polished metal and will be sold in three different, as-yet-undisclosed finishes. According to Movano, the available sizes for the Evie smart ring are between 5 and 11.

Movano’s claims regarding the Evie smart ring have not been cleared by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), but the business says it is “going to pursue” permission; if granted, the Evie will be the first medical-grade smart ring on the market.

In October, the ring underwent hypoxia testing, with results showing clinical SpO2 and heart rate measurements consistent with FDA accuracy criteria. Because of this, the Evie will be able to compete with other wearables like fitness trackers and smart rings by marketing itself as a pulse oximeter.

Attendees at CES 2023 in Las Vegas will be able to try on Movano’s Evie smart ring for themselves next week. The company has not given a specific release date for the Evie smart ring, saying simply that it will be available in the middle of 2023.

We may be going toward a future where smart rings are more widespread than you think, as recent reports imply that Google may soon allow users operate augmented reality glasses with a smart bracelet or ring.
