Coming Soon, and I Can’t Wait to Try the OnePlus 11

It should come as no surprise that OnePlus’s next smartphone will be dubbed the OnePlus 11 5G. The phone has already been released in China, and its worldwide debut is scheduled for February 7. After the disappointing OnePlus 10T, which made dubious trade-offs and failed to clarify its value proposition, OnePlus has released the OnePlus 10 Pro as a follow-up to last year’s excellent OnePlus 10 device.

Thankfully, OnePlus gave us a sneak glimpse at the 11 in December. The new phone has been featured prominently on the Chinese version of the OnePlus website. With the assistance of Google Translate, I ploughed through it, and now I can’t help but think of a famous sentence from the film Django Unchained, spoken by Leonardo DiCaprio.

“My interest was piqued, gentlemen. I was distracted, but now I’m listening.”

As the third version of OnePlus’s smartphone to be produced in conjunction with Hasselblad, my expectations for the 11 were sky-high to begin with. To this far, Hasselblad’s impact has been mostly unnoticed, limited to fine-tuning cameras and implementing useful software capabilities like the Xpan panoramic-style. It’s possible that the OnePlus 11 will be the first device to have improved camera technology as a direct consequence of the collaboration.

Keep in mind that details and subtlety may be lost in translation as you read on.

The design of the OnePlus 11 is superb

Its design continues where that of the 10 Pro left off. According to the site, the OnePlus 11’s design was inspired by a “black hole in science fiction,” which translates to “cosmic void.” In contrast to the 10 Pro’s roughly square camera bump, the 11’s is round on top and tapers down towards the phone’s edge. Like the clasp of a leather portfolio. When the phone is held in a landscape orientation, the silhouette of the camera bump is reminiscent to Darth Vader’s helmet.

The website displays the device in two different colour options. The translated language refers to the rough black surface as “silk glass,” and the matte green tint as “not quite British racing green.” Apparently this indicates the surface is textured yet is really smooth to the touch.

Andrew Lanxon, one of my coworkers here at CNET, just acquired a OnePlus 11. His comments on the phone’s performance while testing will have to wait, but in the meantime, he tweeted a few pictures of it.

There aren’t many front-on shots, but the display seems to have curved edges that “waterfall” off the right and left sides of the device. To the top left is a rectangular cutout that serves as a home for the front-facing camera.

The website has a product trailer with dazzling stylised closeups of the OnePlus 11 as well as a slider that may be used as an alert. After its removal from the OnePlus 10T, OnePlus has said that the button will be reinstated. The 11 is comparable to the Nubia Red Magic 8, which uses a physical slider to activate the phone’s game mode.

Newest Android components are included into the OnePlus 11

The maximum refresh rate of the phone’s 6.7-inch AMOLED screen is 120 frames per second. The screen is an LTPO 3 model. The LTPO 2 panel was used in last year’s 10 Pro. Low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, or LTPO, is a material used in modern displays that allows for a rapid refresh rate without significantly draining the power supply. The translated language suggests that LTPO 3 is more power efficient and has a smoother operation. Graphics suggest that the display refresh rate may go as low as 1Hz, which is the same as the always-on display on the iPhone 14 Pro.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor inside the 11 is 35% quicker at processing CPU tasks and 25% faster at graphics processing, according to a press release from OnePlus. The 11 is among the first smartphones to have Qualcomm’s latest processor. The 11 has 256GB or 512GB of internal storage and 16GB of RAM.

Dual batteries of 2,500 mAh capacity each, capable of rapid 100W charging, provide the juice for the whole shebang. The previous year’s 10 Pro also included a twin battery and 80W fast charging, with the exception of US versions, which were limited to 65W. In most regions, the OnePlus 10T can be charged at 150W, however in the United States, it can only charge at 125W. To put that in context, the iPhone 14 Pro is capable of rapid charging at 20W. The OnePlus 11’s batteries, according to the company, can be charged from zero to full in only 25 minutes.
