Tesla intends to expand its Texas facility by $770 million

This week, Tesla informed officials in Texas that it expects to spend nearly $770 million on an expansion of its facility in the Austin area.

The car company filed its proposals with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration.

From the looks of the paperwork, Tesla plans to construct a battery cell testing facility and a cathode and drive unit manufacturing facility at the site this year. According to the application, Tesla also intends to construct a “die shop” within the manufacturing facility.

The plant has been operational for less than a year, but has already begun expanding. In April 2022, Tesla threw a celebration called the Cyber Rodeo to celebrate the opening of their new facility in Austin, Texas.

Some of its Model Y automobiles are now being assembled at the plant. A lack of the more efficient 4680 cells that make up its new battery design initially stymied the factory’s output. Panasonic expects to begin manufacturing the upgraded cells at the $4 billion battery facility it is developing in Kansas in early 2024, at which time the bottleneck should be eliminated.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has said that after the Texas plant reaches full production, the business would shift its emphasis to the delayed Cybertruck. The long-delayed start of Cybertruck production is finally scheduled for this summer.
