The Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has pledged to extend software updates for its products for as long as the company remains an Android OEM. Beginning with devices released in 2023, the firm has pledged to give four years of major ColorOS upgrades.

Release of ColorOS 13 coincided with the announcement of the company’s new software update policy, which follows on the heels of an announcement by rival manufacturer OnePlus that it would be implementing a similar strategy for its own forthcoming smartphones. Oppo claims that this only applies to chosen 2023 flagship products, thus its current range of premium phones will not be receiving the same approach. Even its mid-tier offerings are reliable.

While releasing on August18, ColorOS 13 has already arrived on 33 smartphone models throughout the world, according to Oppo.

The new update strategy is almost certainly going to apply to the upcoming Oppo Find X6 series and the recently announced foldable duo, the Find N2 and Find N2 Flip. The Oppo Find X5 and Find X5 Pro are incompatible, though.

Oppo’s latest action, which promises lengthier OS upgrades for its flagship handsets than previously, should serve as a warning to Samsung and Google. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families, Google’s top Android phones, are only guaranteed three years of significant OS upgrades.

Oppo’s forthcoming flagship models will receive five years’ worth of security patches, probably arriving every other month like OnePlus’ timetable, in addition to significant OS updates. The new Oppo approach is identical to Samsung’s, with the exception that Samsung provides security patches on a monthly basis.

The current upgrade strategy from Oppo is an important milestone in the software dedication from Android manufacturers. Although Oppo and other OEMs still have a long way to go before they can keep up with Apple in terms of software upgrades, the improvements are welcome.
