Leaked images of the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti GPU give us hope for our energy bills

New visual proof of the power connector layout of this graphics card suggests it won’t be a power hog, lending credence to rumours that Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti is imminent.

Gigabyte’s RTX 4070 Ti Aero OC is shown from all sides; it is white and has a triple-fan cooler; the power supply is also visible. The 4070 Ti has a special Nvidia adapter that converts from two 8-pin connectors to a 16-pin layout (more on that in a moment).

This is all presuming, of course, that these pictures aren’t fakes, but they seem legit.

Previous speculation pointed to 7,680 CUDA Cores and 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM being standard for the RTX 4070 Ti (and we can see the memory configuration on the box in the pics here).

The 4070 Ti will undoubtedly debut at Nvidia’s “special address” at CES 2023 on January3, and the graphics card is expected to go on sale very soon after, with January 5 being the speculated release date.

Influence and Costs

It seems increasingly likely that the RTX 4070 Ti will be released at CES now that rumours have gained traction and photographs of a third-party variant have surfaced (or as certain as anything from the rumour mill gets, anyway).

A bigger question is whether or not it will be available for purchase immediately after its unveiling, but again, it seems likely that it would, considering that this GPU is effectively a (slightly) reworked RTX 4080 12GB. (This is the card that Nvidia had ready and then ‘unlaunched,’ meaning that they had everything ready to go except for the announcement).

The 2 x 8-pin format of the power adapter (required for ATX 2.0 power supply, which is what most PCs use) is reflective of the 4070 Ti’s lower power requirements than those of the RTX 4080 (3 x 8-pin) and RTX 4090 (4 x 8-pin). The rumour mill estimates the 4080’s power consumption at 285W.

Adapters have not been reported melting on the RTX 4080. Nvidia has made it clear that these instances are extremely rare and limited to its RTX 4090 graphics card (likely due to the connector not being seated properly in its port).

At this point, the only remaining piece of information regarding the 4070 Ti is its pricing, which is, of course, essential. In light of AMD’s recent release of the RX 7900 XTX, which has made the RTX 4080 seem even more costly than it previously was, we anticipate that Nvidia will lower the price of the RTX 4080 and increase the value proposition of the RTX 4070 Ti in order to better compete with the RDNA 3 flagship.

That’s the course of action that makes the most sense to us, especially because Nvidia needs to explain why the 4070 Ti will (likely) cost less than the discontinued 4080 12GB, and lowering the price of the 16GB version of the latter seems like the most direct way to do so. However, in the world of GPUs, what should happen and what really does happen are not always the same thing.
