Amazon is preparing to release a new app with sports streaming and other sports-related content

According to a recent story from The Information, Amazon is putting a lot of effort into its video content section and is working on a whole new app for live streaming sports.

Amazon’s newest app will provide live streaming of not just the most watched sports, but also a wide variety of other programming. Amazon currently owns the rights to broadcast some Premier League events, as well as select baseball tournaments, and is actively pursuing streaming rights for Formula One, the FE, and select cricket league competitions.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently referred to live sports as “a unique asset” that the company plans to continue investing in, so this news comes at a good time. Amazon has exclusive rights to broadcast NFL Thursday Night Football this season, and it also broadcasts select Premier League soccer events and Yankees baseball games live.

In addition to the live events, Amazon has put resources into creating supplementary sports content by releasing original sports discussion programmes on Prime Video and its ad-supported streaming service Freevee. Besides the FIA’s Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula E series, it has been reported that Amazon is interested in purchasing the streaming rights to a few other league-based sports, including some cricket league competitions.

To supplement the live events, Amazon has created original sports conversation programmes on Prime Video and its ad-supported streaming service Freevee in a number of regions.

Amazon has the option of including the sports streaming perks into the existing Prime Video plans or launching a new tier with exclusive sports programming to charge subscribers. It’s possible that the firm aims to charge a monthly fee for access to sports content in this standalone app, given the high price of streaming rights.

A number of positions were eliminated as a result of Amazon’s recent examination of its unproductive businesses, which is coincident with the release of this new report. Amazon still seems intent on expanding Prime Video and its live sports streaming programming, despite its current financial situation.

The story does not specify when the new application would be released, nor does it say for certain that Amazon will go through the steps required to release the sports app. Due to growing expenses and falling demand brought on by economic uncertainties, the corporation has been assessing its unproductive business segments and initiating layoffs lately.
