A significant blast from the past is the company that has been imitated the most in recent months

To get access to personal information or financial details, criminals are increasingly posing as Yahoo in phishing attacks, according to recent studies.

Check Point Research has studied the most often copied trademarks as of the fourth quarter of 2022. The survey found that for the months of October, November, and December 2022, Yahoo was the most often spoofed brand, jumping 23 spots to take the number one spot.

Common scam emails would claim the recipient had won a “award” or “prize money” in a Yahoo contest. The victims are requested to provide their information (opens in new tab), including their banking information, so that they may receive the award or payout (often in the hundreds of thousands of dollars).

International Package Delivery (DHL), Microsoft (Microsoft), and LinkedIn

There is a warning in the email that the victims shouldn’t discuss the incident with anybody.

Check Point Research further indicates that the IT business is the most impersonated industry overall. DHL was the second-most imitated brand, accounting for 16% of all assaults.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year’s are all major shopping days that drive up demand for DHL deliveries over the last three months of the year.

Third place was held by Microsoft, with 11%. After a temporary decline, LinkedIn has regained its previous position at number five, receiving 5.7% of all phishing attempts.

Even now, phishing emails are one of the most common (and effective) methods of cybercrime. Criminals find easy prey in trusting or otherwise preoccupied consumers, who they then deceive into revealing a trove of private information. They could even trick users into downloading and running malware, which can lead to even more severe assaults like ransomware.

The easiest method to avoid falling victim to phishing is to be very sceptical of any emails you get and to verify their legitimacy before acting on anything they claim to be.
