The Best Gaming TV for Xbox Series X: LG CX OLED

The LG CX OLED and LG GX will both get Dolby Vision gaming support at 120Hz within the next week, making them shoe-ins for best gaming TVs for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

A Forbes story goes through the new firmware upgrade, which is expected to arrive imminently in South Korea (next few days) and then spread across the globe before the end of October – allowing gamers all over the world to enjoy Dolby Vision gaming at 120Hz.

After the previous update, on April 3, 2018, it’s now possible to stream games from your phone on TVs with WebOS 2.0 installed. The software is based on the open-source platform Android TV that LG has developed for its smart TVs.

After the prior update, it’s now feasible to watch movies or play games from your phone on these TVs with WebOS 2.0 installed. LG has created Android TV as an open-source platform for its smart TVs, which is based on Android.

However, according to LG’s press release, “additional 2021 and 2020 TV models are also being tested for Dolby Vision gaming in either 60Hz or 120Hz” (thank you, Vincent Teoh), which means the company now appears to be keeping its word.

What’s all the fuss about?

Dolby Vision is an evolving HDR format that, like Dolby Cinema, adds shot-by-shot information to improve the color and contrast of its HDR photos.

It’s most commonly used in movies and TV shows, though it’s gradually finding its way into gaming. The format is supported on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. For now, PS5 gamers won’t get the benefits of this latest upgrade or the format.

However, because LG is still building up momentum in the market, it will take a while for you to find TVs that support Dolby Vision gaming. Because of this, you won’t be able to enjoy Dolby Vision gaming on most TVs right now.

According to Microsoft, “more than 100 next-gen HDR titles optimized for Series X|S are available now or coming soon in Dolby Vision,” but as of September 2021, “next-gen games supporting Dolby Vision are already here.”

The main benefit is for owners of the LG CX OLED, which was a very popular OLED TV when it debuted last year – and which could still be the best option for an OLED screen if Black Friday comes around in late 2021.

This 4K HDR screen offers vibrant colors and contrasts with OLED’s deep blacks, as well as support for both automatic low latency mode switching and variable refresh rates (VRR).

When it comes to outstanding gaming on the most recent Xbox consoles, the LG CX (or GX, a slightly more expensive variant intended for wall mounting) will almost certainly be your best option.
